Climate change affects the economic, social and environmental processes of countries in different parts of the world. Therefore, this sensitive issue should be at the center of attention of the international community. This was stated by President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon on the sidelines of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
He said that the main indicator of this phenomenon could be the intensive melting of glaciers and a similar process taking place in Tajikistan is a vivid confirmation of this. “Out of 13,000 glaciers in Tajikistan, 1,000 have completely melted, and the volume of the largest continental glacier, Fedchenko, has significantly decreased,” Emomali Rahmon added. He believes that the rapid melting of glaciers — the main sources of fresh water — can cause very negative consequences. “In this context, Tajikistan proposed to declare 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Protection,” said Emomali Rahmon. Also, he again called for the establishment of the Special International Fund for the Protection of Glaciers. According to him, these initiatives will give a new impetus to the adoption of collective measures and the implementation of actions to protect glaciers at the global level.
